centre of the universe: the dreaming

06/10/2008: "Thought Provoking" Melistress mentioned this article about some really stupid kids recently. It sparked a bit of a rant on my part, mostly because, if you read that article there, about these kids who went out drinking, then attempted to drive home, with too many in a vehicle and no seatbelts....if you read that article, I'll call your attention to the third-last paragraph (the last paragraph is one sentence long). I'd like you to take a look at what the mayor says.

No, you know what? This is what the mayor says: "Boys will be boys, and nowadays some of the young boys go out and have a little more fun than they probably should, and unfortunately it went the wrong way."

One young man died in that crash, and three others are so injured they can't talk. The one kid who *did* wear his seatbelt is severely traumatized. And I refuse...I REFUSE to accept that because I have boy children, they will someday kill someone or die themselves because 'boys will be boys'. That's the most insensitive, ridiculous thing I think I have ever heard. I can't even begin to explain (other than that I just have) how angry that statement makes me. If I was one of the parents of one of those kids...or probably any of the kids going to school in that town, I would write to town council and tell the man to step down as mayor.

"Sorry your kid's dead, ma'am, but I guess that's just the way the cookie crumbles, isn't it? He was a boy, after all, and you know boys..."

If I've ever wanted to kick someone in the nuts, I want to kick that mayor in the nuts right now.

Nothing we can do I suppose, after all the mayor is a boy, and "boys will be boys". We can't expect them to make smart remarks about the subject when boys can't even be expected to live past 17!

I think the tragedy is just amplified when you have such a thoughtless mayor as the town spokesperson. Heartless...and stupid.
I hope someday he doesn't get the same treatment if he ever loses a child.

Like the old saying goes: "You can fix stupid."

Kicks? Sure. Not just for the mayor though.
